Why is 'Team Obama fighting to keep the Ayers/Obama relationship "private?"

“The University of Illinois has refused to release records related to Sen. Barack Obama’s service for a nonprofit educational project that put him in contact with activist William Ayers, a 1960s-era radical and now education professor,” reports Mark Silva at The Chicago Tribune’s Swamp blog.

“The university’s Chicago campus maintains that the donor of the records that document the work of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge has not handed over ownership rights. The university says it is ‘aggressively pursuing’ an agreement with the donor, and as soon as an agreement is reached, the collection will be made accessible to the public. The university has not identified the donor.”

This kerfuffle all started with National Review’s Stanley Kurtz, who writes that he had received permission to pore over the papers but “just before I boarded my flight to Chicago, the top library officials mysteriously intervened to bar access.”

Now, according to Kurtz’s colleague Rich Lowry, the McCain campaign, stung by Team Obama’s efforts to tie their man to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, are pushing the Ayers affair front and center. He reprints a McCain spokesman’s missive:
