McCain Opposes Equal Pay Law, Not really (as you will see)
McCain Opposes Equal Pay Law
[Editors Note] this issue was brought up this morning on the Saturday Fox & Friends show and the Democratic 'pundit' for the day immediately attacked by first using the Obama sound byte of "more of Bush" to associate the McCain campaign with the President. Well, several issues come to mind:washingtonpost.com, Politics, Elections

NEW ORLEANS — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who skipped a Senate vote seeking equal pay for women last night in order to campaign for president, said he opposed the measure because it would prompt a flood of lawsuits.
Senate Republicans defeated the bill yesterday on a vote of 56 to 42, by blocking a full debate and vote on the bill. Democratic Sens. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) both returned to Washington in order to support the measure, which is aimed at responding to a recent Supreme Court decision that sets a deadline on how quickly workers must sue over pay discrimination. The presumptive GOP nominee is visiting poor communities throughout the nation, including towns in Alabama and Appalachia; today he toured New Orleans' Ninth Ward.
"I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what's being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," McCain told reporters yesterday. "This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."
- This is not an 'Equal Pay Law.' The bill they spoke of really had nothing to do with "equal pay for woman" and everything to do with lawyers getting more money and increasing the power of big government in our lives. Let me give you an example of the consequences of this Democratic bill. If passed it would give a woman the ability to sue no matter how long time has passed since they worked for whomever. The Democrats keep referring to them as "corporations" but the people most hurt here would be small-business owners who employ 85% of workers in this country. These small businesses would be forced to simply cave in to the demands of the opposing lawyers as most could not afford to go to court to fight this issue. They write a letter to the business, the business sends a check to the lawyer. Case closed.
- The Supreme court had already decided on this issue (see the above article), so if we don't like the Supreme Court decision, we can just pass legislation for what we really want. This is a typical way that politicians get to be elitists and propose legislation that simply gets them votes. Did McCain fold and simply ignore this bill (as Obama frequently does) because he knew that it would be unpopular (especially with all the spin)? With him campaigning right now this would have been the easy way out. Is that what we want in our elected officials?
- Can you see the television adds now. When you were 17 did you work for that nasty fast food restaurant while you went to college. If you want money call the law firm of (fill in the blank) now for information on how we can get you it for you because that bad corporation broke the law! OK, the "bad" part probably would not be in the add. But I think you get the picture.
- And last... this is all about the Democratic party getting the votes from the female voters (especially the former Clinton supporters) who are either are not going to vote at all, or who will vote for McCain rather than the Obama/Biden ticket. PUMA's, are you getting this?
I could go on, but lets leave it at this point as I think you get the picture. The Obama campaign will continue to use the tired, old, and incorrect campaign slogan of "More of the same" when they refer to the McCain presidency. But this could not be further from the truth. We now have two mavericks for the price of one! McCain has united the party with the Sarah Palin pick for VP and she will be a presidential candidate for the 2012 election. Not to sound too 'corporate,' but I'm Lovin' it!
