9-11, May we never forget.
[John K. Matyi] On September 11, 2001 I was on leave from my duties at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama so I had the unfortunate experience of watching this tragedy unfold live on TV. As a veteran of war I have seen many things, acts of violence, death of brother soldiers, broken bodies, but nothing ever like this. As I watched the helpless jump from the Twin Towers that day to accept certain death rather than face the burning flames I was frozen in front of my TV. I can honestly say that I pray this never happens again, but I also hope that people everywhere will keep the memory of this day and the 3000 people that died in their prayers.
As a psychotherapist I have often counseled men and woman on how they must separate the emotion from the images so they can deal better with the memory. When it comes to 9-11, I hope we never become inoculated from the strong emotions we felt back then. We must always remember, we must always feel their pain.
