“You will be hated by all for my name’s sake." The upcoming Proposition 8 referendum in California and the future of our country

[John K. Matyi] There is now less than two months until we elect the next president of the United States, not to mention a growing number of new state and local politicians. I am hoping that the presidential debate as well as the VP debate will bring forth some answers to the many questions Americans have about the beliefs of the candidates.

"Being Christian pilgrims in American culture does not end our influence, it takes the swagger out of it. We don’t get cranky when evil triumphs for a season. We don’t whine when things don’t go our way. We are not hardened with anger. We understand. What’s happening is not new. The early Christians were profoundly out of step with their culture. The imperial words of Christ were ringing in their ears: “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.  But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Mark 13:13). “Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)."

Obama worship is certainly an easy position to take, especially for the young in our culture, following the values and beliefs of the majority of your friends is a tradition of the young. Everyone likes to be popular, but this desire is especially strong in our early years. The lessons we teach, as well as our own behavior, have great impact on the forming of their belief system. We could discuss the upbringing (or lack thereof) of Senator Obama here as an example, but we will leave that for another day. We have so little real data about his life that we often have to go to the books and other things he himself has written for any documentation. So for now we will leave that to the (hopefully objective) historians.

From what we do know we can reliably ascertain that Barack Obama is the most liberal candidate we have ever had for the presidency, and we have had a few. But even that information is denied by the Obama campaign team with ease as he has little history to rely on for evaluation. In the Illinois senate you can simply vote 'Present' (yes there is a 'present' button) instead of a yes/no answer, so that your vote becomes open to interpretation.

I will now bring you back to the topic of Homosexual Marriage by giving you a short quote and a link to an excellent sermon regarding this issue. I encourage you to read this and then discuss it with your family. With books like "Heather Has Two Mommies" joyfully presenting homosexual relationships to even small children in our schools, it is up to the family to properly educate our family and others with the truth. To do that we need the proper information, so here it is:

    The Dark Exchange
toward a biblical response to homosexuality and same-sex marriage

The upcoming Proposition 8 referendum in California will largely determine the future of same-sex marriage across the nation. AFA Journal publishes the following sermon by Pastor John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church,  Minneapolis, Minnesota, to help Christians respond Biblically  to this controversial issue.

In his opening comments, Pastor Piper describes the tension of the Christian life – being in the world, but not of the world. Drawing from the Scripture, he portrays followers of Christ as both “pilgrims” and “indigenous.”

In the context of this paradox Piper seeks to communicate a Biblical response to homosexuality and the battle over same-sex marriage. His conviction is that in order to love homosexuals, Christians must follow the Scripture in calling homosexual behavior sinful and destructive. “If you deny the truth that homosexual behavior is sin, but instead approve of it or rejoice in it, what you bring to the homosexual person will not be love – no matter how affirming, kind or tolerant,” he says.

Originally delivered on August 8, 2004, the full text of the sermon is available at
www.desiringgod.org. The original sermon was titled “Discerning the Will of God Concerning Homosexuality and Marriage.” The version below has been edited for content and length.

[John K. Matyi] As the article points out, "The upcoming Proposition 8 referendum in California will largely determine the future of same-sex marriage across the nation," so please consider that statement before you reduce this issue to being 'Just a California thing.' This is important for our entire country. But It all starts with our families.

Barack Obama has stated in a June 2007 speech, that "Whatever we once were, we're no longer a Christian nation. At least not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers," Let's prove him wrong. We are a Christian Nation. Unlike other nations we have Freedom of Religion, not freedom from religion.
