WATERLOO,Iowa — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says he doesn'twear an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for"true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Askedabout it Wednesday in an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,the Illinois senator said he stopped wearing the pin shortly after theattacks and instead hoped to show his patriotism by explaining hisideas to citizens.
"The truth is that rightafter 9/11 I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularlybecause as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitutefor I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that areof importance to our national security.
"Idecided I won't wear that pin on my chest," he said in the interview."Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believewill make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament tomy patriotism."

Most official U.S. government aircraft, including Air Force One, have U.S. flags on their tails.
Both Fox News and the Chicago Sun-Times posted pictures of the Obama campaign's redressed airplane, which does not have an American flag or any other U.S. national symbols on the section that sports the airplane door from which Obama and his team will enter and exit.
