[Editorial] Obama's New Attack on Those Who Don't Want Higher Taxes: ‘Selfishness’

[John K. Matyi] I woke up this morning to hear that Obama was out on the campaign trail and probably not using a teleprompter. Here is a excerpt from ABC's PoliticalPunch:

On the stump this week, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has pushed back against Sen.John McCain's description of his tax policies.

"The reason that we want to do this, change our tax code, is not because I have anything against the rich," Obama said in Sarasota, Fla.,yesterday. "I love rich people! I want all of you to be rich. Go for it. That’s the American dream, that’s the American way, that’s terrific.

"The point is, though, that — and it’s not just charity, it’s not just that I want to help the middle class and working people who are trying to get in the middle class — it’s that when we actually make sure that everybody’s got a shot – when young people can all go to college, when everybody’s got decent health care, when everybody’s got a little more money at the end of the month –then guess what? Everybody starts spending that money, they decide maybe I can afford a new car, maybe I can afford a computer for my child. They can buy the products and services that businesses are selling and everybody is better off. All boats rise. That’s what happened in the 1990s, that’s what we need to restore. And that’s what I’m gonna do as president of the United States of America.

"John McCain and Sarah Palin they call this socialistic," Obama continued. "You know I don’t know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness."

[JKM] So now it appears that we (the taxpayers) have gone from being “Patriotic [according to Joe Biden],”to being “selfish.” Well, let me spell this out. The top 1% oftaxpayers in this country already pay 40% of all taxes. When you look at the top 5%, they pay 50% of the tax burden. The other 95%(who are designated for a tax cut in the Obama plan) now pay 3% oftaxes (don't forget 40 to 50% of individuals and families in that bracket pay no taxes at all). They also get most of the benefits. So what happens to the incentive for the top 5% to either work harder orcontinue to build their businesses? Even more important, why would anyone want to increase their income so that the government will simply increase their 'take' and 'unselfishly' allow them to keep less of their money? Here is an excerpt from an article written back in 2003 (about Hawaii) about how increasing taxes and regulations (more taxes) affect the economy.

Well, if they have not figured it out by this time, if the cost of doing business keeps on escalating, then those businesses will just find some other place to do business — scratch one more place to find a job. And if costs go up and the business can't afford to raise prices because it will affect sales, then guess where that business will look to compensate for the higher costs of doing business? Employees can just forget about a pay increase. Another alternative is to layoff employees or cut hours or as many businesses have done, going to shorter work weeks with more part-time employees so they don't have to provide benefits.

[JKM] Itis not difficult to find many instances of how increasing taxes on the people and businesses who actually produce the income increases unemployment, decreases the GDP,and actually is a major incentive for a business to move their operations somewhere where the environment is friendly. This of course increases employment somewhere else . But if the poor business environment is in a state (likeRhode Island), then businesses will move either to a 'friendlier' state (like New Hampshire). If it is the federal government that is the cause for a poor business climate, then the companies move offshore; taking the jobs with them.

When will politicians recognize that all boats do rise with the incoming tide, but only If taxes and regulations are reduced for all businesses and individuals alike. If we tax our business out of business, that only result of a 'rising tide' is that consumers will drown in inflation and unemployment.

This November 4th vote as if your job depended on it, or if you are unemployed and really want a job; vote for every conservative on the ticket.

    John,
Ayn Rand wrote a book entitled "The Virtue of Selfishness". How ironic. It is an amazing philosophy of how selfishness is correct and good and leads us to do things that, on the surface benefit others, but actually are in our own selfish best interest. Thus the title the virtue of selfishnes. She makes a brilliant argument. Have you ever read it? I think I have it around here somewhere if you are interested.

Robert, Thanks for the offer... I looked up that book on Amazon.com back when I posted on Obama's use of the phrase "Since when has selfishness become a virtue." My guess is one of his handlers say the title and liked it, just never bothered to read any of the book.

If you can find the book I'd love to borrow it. Thanks for the offer.
