KAY IVEY CALLS ON LT. GOV. JIM FOLSOM,JR. AND DEMOCRAT SENATE LEADERSHIP TO MOVE IMMEDIATELY ON SB 233
“Theclock is ticking, Mr. Folsom. Please give Alabamians the chance to protect therights that the federal government snatched away from them late Sunday night.”
(MONTGOMERY, AL March 23,2010) Statement from State Treasurer and Republican gubernatorialcandidate Kay Ivey on the need for immediate action on SB233.
“On behalf of the people of Alabama, our statelegislature has a momentous opportunity to blunt the dreadful impact ofCongress’ just-passed ‘Obamacare’ health care legislation. This opportunity isthe passage of Senate Bill 233.
“Senate Bill 233 protects both Alabama’s statesovereignty and the individual rights of our citizens. It would rejectunconstitutional federal encroachment so that Alabamians maintain theirGod-given freedom to provide for their own health care. It also gives ourcitizens a voice against ‘Obamacare’ by allowing them to vote for a stateconstitutional amendment which will ‘prohibit any person, employer or healthcare provider from being compelled to participate in any health care system.’Alabama voters would be asked to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
“During Sunday night’s landmark U.S. House vote onthe Pelosi-Reid-Obama vision of socialist health care for Americans, all sevenAlabama House members voted against the plan, regardless of their politicalaffiliation. Clearly, the people of our state want nothing to do with thisfederal power-grab and its horrendous mandates.
“The number of days left for legislativeaction in the 2010 session is dwindling to a handful. There isn’t amoment to spare. So, on the very day that President Obama has signed thisoutrageous legislation into law, I call upon Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom,Jr., who presides over the state senate, to rise quickly to the occasion andexpress his public support for SB233.
“He should clearly proclaim his allegiance with theoverwhelming number of citizens in this state who oppose ‘Obamacare,’ orexplain to us why he supports Socialized Medicine and the usurpation of ourliberty.
“I further call on his Democrat colleagues, whocontrol the work agenda in the state senate, to bring SB 233 to the Senatefloor for a vote, and send it to the people of Alabama for their approval thisNovember.
“The clock is ticking, Mr. Folsom. Please giveAlabamians the chance to protect the rights that the federal governmentsnatched away from them late Sunday night.”
